In order for NetBeans to realize its full potential, it needs to work at leat as well as Eclipse for those core features we depend on so heavily. I for one will take the list of "bad" issues as a call to action, and once I have a bit more time I'll do whatever I can to help.Charles Oliver Nutterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06400331959739924670noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4704664917418794835.post-85479027381277923072006-08-31T07:23:00.000-07:002006-08-31T07:23:00.000-07:00Some 4 years ago I started looking at Eclipse and ...Some 4 years ago I started looking at Eclipse and Netbeans and dropped NB immediately at that time as it sememd to have far fewer features, scope and following. For quite some time I tried to
install/update any Eclipse plugin as a
test for the overall behaviour: until right before Callisto this was nothing less than a mess, and even now it is far from a means of confidence building. I still experience - excluding ill-behaving and useless plugins now - random errors w/messages "No features found.. another site" even w/fresh Callisto install/update, causing a fresh
re-install of the whole IDE etc.etc...
all this made me have a look at NB again, and I will certainly give it a try now: the whole story is of course much longer and has many more details.
Finally: I am not a "heavy developer" on either of these, so those doing Java
may feel better but where should trust build if even seemingly "easy" things do not work - and this for years now ?
Enough: regards.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4704664917418794835.post-65239511485032211302006-08-31T07:33:00.000-07:002006-08-31T07:33:00.000-07:00Tim: Thank you for the input! Those tips will certainly be helpful, and I'll try them out when I have some free time.

I figured there were proper channels for getting this information to the NB team. I've tried to feed some of the more aggregious problems back as bugs, though so far only one major item has warranted that treatment. I will endeavor to pass the rest on through a formal channel.

However my intent with these posts is to get the word out about NetBeans...that it's greatly improved, a much more viable Eclipse competitor than ever before, and very impressive, even in beta form. I also want to show others what they might encounter migrating to NetBeans, so they might not feel quite so alone in the process. After posting these lists of good and bad items, I'm planning to post a "Salvation" article that summarizes all I've learned and all tips I've received. Hopefully this series of articles will be useful to both the NB team and to folks interested in using it.Charles Oliver Nutterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06400331959739924670noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4704664917418794835.post-75352673602625421012006-08-31T13:29:00.000-07:002006-08-31T13:29:00.000-07:00Weird, I am using 3 different versions of Eclipse ...Weird, I am using 3 different versions of Eclipse now (3.1, 3.2 and Easy Eclipse 3.1) on my dual centrino laptop. They all close in under 2 seconds.

Another note: although I admire your drive, I think you're wasting time with this Eclipse-NetBeans thing. The "Effective Programmer" says: use one tool, and use it really well.
Your JRuby work has an extreme potential and can have a very nice impact on our industry. I would rate this as much more important.

But then again, I would not dare to keep someone from doing what he really likes :)Erik van Oostenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15976519439979651010noreply@blogger.com
